SELECT BY INTEGRATION

Five families. One complete position measurement.

Select the interface first, then confirm the range, envelope and environment with engineering. All listed ranges are configuration requests.

SENSOR TO CONTROLLER

A position sensor for each integration problem.

MECHANICAL SELECTION

Free core, guided rod or spring contact?

Free unguided core

Separate the moving core from the coil body. External guidance must maintain clearance; the electromagnetic sensing element has no sliding electrical contact.

Captive guided rod

A guided assembly simplifies linkage. Review side load, rod alignment, bearings and usable travel before integrating.

Spring-return probe

A contact tip follows the measured surface. Review tip force, pre-travel, overtravel and contact wear.

Concept schematics. Non-contact induction does not make bearings, springs or contact tips wear-free.

ENVIRONMENT & DUTY

What happens around the sensor matters.

01 / GAUGING

Contact force changes the measurement.

Review tip geometry, part stiffness and probe guidance for multi-point automotive and thickness fixtures.

Review gauging probes ↗
02 / HOT VALVES

Separate the winding from the electronics.

Review continuous temperature, pressure, medium and remote cable before choosing an AC-LVDT chain.

Review high-temperature requests ↗
03 / MATERIALS TESTS

Minimize the intrusion of the sensor.

Specify the miniature envelope, moving mass and alignment for triaxial fixtures and extensometry.

REPLACEMENT ENGINEERING

Begin with the exact model on the drawing.

Macro Sensors / TE, Solartron / AMETEK, HBM, Honeywell, Kavlico and G.L. Collins references need mechanical, electrical and environmental review.

BEFORE YOU CONNECT

Three wires do not always mean DC.

Distinguish conditioned DC, passive AC, inductive half-bridge and digital interfaces before applying power.

CONFIGURATION RELEASE

Define the acceptance test before the sensor.

Stroke & linearity

Agree bipolar range, null, sensitivity and residual error against a reference displacement stage. State whether error is % of full range or reading.

Repeatability & noise

Define approach direction, probe force, electronics, filtering, temperature and sample method. Resolution alone does not describe repeatability.

Thermal & installation

Check temperature drift, warm-up and mounting stress. Confirm pressure, medium, cable and sealing conditions for the complete assembly.

A proposed review plan, not a claim that a specific LVP model has completed qualification.

Resolve the LVDT selection questions first.

What is an LVDT sensor?

A linear variable differential transformer uses an excited primary and two secondary coils to detect the position of a movable core. A matched demodulator converts the differential AC signal into signed displacement.

Can I connect an LVDT directly to a PLC?

A conditioned DC-LVDT may provide voltage, current or digital output. A passive AC-LVDT requires compatible excitation and demodulation. Check the actual model and controller input.

Is a free-core LVDT maintenance-free?

The sensing principle has no sliding electrical contact. External guidance, bearings, contact tips and seals still have application-dependent wear and service requirements.

Can you review an existing sensor for replacement?

Send the full model, drawing, range convention, excitation/output, connector pinout and operating conditions. Compatibility is reviewed for the exact configuration before quotation.
